September 2025 - What is a VPN?
September 2025
This month we are going to explore what a VPN means, does, and how it is used at Tweet/Garot.
VPN is an acronym that stands for Virtual Private Network that can work to conceal your current location and show as being somewhere else. This is often used as a security mechanism for personal devices, as it can allow your device to be more protected from potential scammers since your location may show as being in California even though you are in Wisconsin.
In a professional setting, Tweet/Garot uses a VPN to have your device show its location as being at one of the TG offices, specifically connecting to our network. This enables you to access files, apps, and operate as you would if you were at one of the offices while being anywhere in the world.
The Tweet VPN is taking your connection, sending it to our network to connect, and then sending it back to your device. While this makes it easier to access what you need, it can also significantly affect your internet speed, making your browser load slower and things take longer to sync. This happens with any VPN but is more noticeable when you are actively working and if your internet connection is not strong to start.
If you ever run into issues with your VPN connection, please reach out to IT and we would be glad to help troubleshoot to help.
